What is Halal Meat?

Halal is an Arabic word which translates to “allowed” or “lawful”. The term ‘halal” is that which is permitted and allowed according to Islamic jurisprudence. Zabiha, also an Arabic word, refers to the method of Islamic slaughter which is most humane to the animal. According to zabiha principles, animals are slaughtered by a clean cut to the jugular vein with respect and compassion to the animal. The blood is then drained thoroughly from the animal, assuring the highest standard of cleanliness and purity resulting in a higher standard of quality for the consumer. Not only do Muslims seek out halal meat for their dietary needs, but people from different ethnic and religious backgrounds look for the halal label on meats to be assured of healthy, high-quality foods.

Why Choose Halal Meat?

Humane treatment of animals: According to Islamic principles, animals should be treated with kindness and respect. Halal slaughter involves a quick and humane death for the animal, which some people believe is more ethical than other methods of slaughter.

Health benefits: Halal meat is required to have the blood drained from the animal after slaughter, which some could result in a healthier product for the consumer and is less prone to certain diseases.

Religious and cultural reasons: For Muslims, consuming halal meat is a religious requirement. Additionally, some non-Muslim people may choose to eat halal meat out of respect for Islamic customs and beliefs.
